Submersible borehole pumps R&D: a constantly evolving field

Research and development in the submersible borehole pump sector is a constantly evolving field, driven by the increasing demand for more efficient, durable, and sustainable solutions. The need to reduce energy consumption while also adapting to the requirements of increasingly complex applications makes this type of product highly challenging for pump manufacturers. Additionally, having access to a wide range of submersible borehole pumps is crucial for several reasons, as each application has specific needs that require tailored solutions. Submersible borehole pumps are used across many sectors and for various purposes; therefore, the availability of a wide range allows for successfully tackling the various technical, economic, and environmental challenges.

The advantages of a full range of submersible borehole pumps

Calpeda has expanded its range of submersible borehole pumps with new models, precisely with the aim of better meeting customer needs: civil applications, professional agricultural use, industrial applications, marine water treatment, and solutions for water authorities. Furthermore, the range of customization possibilities is extensive, thanks to the combination of standard versions and tailored solutions. This approach allows for adapting pumps to the specific needs of the customer in terms of size, performance, and particular technical characteristics. For example, the use of different construction metallurgies allows for selecting the most suitable material based on the environment and operating conditions, ensuring optimal performance and long-term durability.

Let’s take a look at the most suitable submersible borehole pump for each application.

Submersible borehole pumps for professional agricultural use: reliability and durability

When it comes to agriculture, the 6” – 18” cast iron SDS series submersible borehole pumps are an excellent choice. Their main feature is their high flow rate, up to 950m3/h, which allows them to meet any requirement. It is crucial that pumps provide an adequate flow rate for the area to be irrigated and the type of agricultural system (drip irrigation, sprinklers, etc.) to maintain system efficiency. Compact and particularly robust, these pumps are designed to operate even at great depths. It is important to note that a submersible pump must be capable of overcoming the distance between the water source and the irrigation area, while also accounting for pressure losses in the system. In this case, high heads, up to 750 meters, can be achieved.
The product offers a high level of customization, with the option of selecting from cast iron, bronze, and stainless steel for the impeller and other components. The submersible motors are built to the highest standards, ensuring excellent efficiency and delivering tangible savings in energy and costs.

Submersible borehole pumps for heavy-duty applications: performance and ultra-resistance

The presence of small amounts of sand in the water is not a problem for cast iron submersible pumps, thanks to a special coupling protection device between the pump and motor. However, when dealing with water containing high concentrations of solids and sand, as in agricultural irrigation with groundwater, it is best to opt for specialized submersible borehole pumps.
The 4” – 6” range, with a cast steel outer casing and NORYL/LEXAN technopolymer impellers (SDP series), stands out for its excellent performance in heavy-duty applications. Reinforced polymers are materials designed to withstand abrasion and damage caused by sediments and impurities in the fluids. Specifically, Calpeda pumps with technopolymer impellers can handle water with very high concentrations of solids and sand, up to 450 g/m3. To ensure ultra-resistance to abrasion, every component is designed with extreme precision: the shaft and bearings are protected from contact with the liquid, preventing abrasion and extending the pump’s lifespan; the bushes are made from sand-resistant material; the pump is protected by a stainless steel AISI 304 check valve, designed to prevent head losses.
In addition to reliability under extreme conditions, submersible borehole pumps with technopolymer impellers excel in performance. The use of high-efficiency submersible motors and eco-design principles makes these pumps highly efficient.
Finally, a look at the QH curve: flow rates go up to 43m3/h, while head reaches 700 meters. These pumps are ideal for artesian wells and deep water extraction.

Stamped stainless steel submersible pumps: versatility at a competitive price

The 6” – 8” stamped stainless steel AISI 304 or AISI 316 SDX series submersible pumps are suitable for a variety of applications: agricultural, civil, industrial, and water service management. They achieve flow rates of up to 120m3/h and heads of up to 700 meters. Therefore, in all applications where good head and flow are required, they are an excellent choice at a competitive price. The hydraulic geometry, impellers, and diffusers in stamped stainless steel ensure performance and high energy savings. Abrasion resistance is guaranteed thanks to the protection of the joint area and the sand-resistant bearing. Additionally, to enhance the robustness and reliability of the product, Calpeda manufactures the valve body and suction support from high precision casted stainless steel— a construction feature that sets these submersible pumps apart from others in the same category on the market.

High precision stainless steel submersible borehole pumps: top of the line

The 6” – 12” high precision stainless steel I-SDS series submersible borehole pumps are the flagship of the range. The series, ideal for highly professional, industrial, and specialized applications, covers a wide curve, with heads reaching up to 900 meters and flow rates up to 700 m3/h.
There are many advantages to this product, largely derived from the special construction features and the complete use of AISI 316 high precision stainless steel. The material quality, absence of welding, and the high thickness of the components ensure maximum resistance to corrosion and abrasion— crucial aspects for heavy-duty uses involving seawater, aggressive liquids, and high sand content. Smooth surfaces, efficiency levels over 80%, and optimized impellers on the duty point ensure high energy savings, which is one of the main whent it comes to submersible borehole pumps.
